Welcome to Lochside Bed and Breakfast in Cowal
Angie and Mick Watts welcome you to Lochside Bed & Breakfast at Tigh-na-Cala, Carrick Castle on the Cowal Peninsula of Argyll, Scotland. “Tigh-na-Cala” translates loosely from the Gaelic as “House by the Harbour” although “Cala” does not have an exact equivalent in English. According to the dictionary it means a firm beach, landing-place, harbour, haven or port – the idea seems to be somewhere that one can land safely from a boat. This is an apt description for Tigh-na-Cala, a chalet-style house, nestling as it does in a quiet bay halfway between Carrick Castle and Lochgoilhead by the shores of Loch Goil. Here you can “get away from it all” if you so wish, relaxing and enjoying good home cooking in comfortable rooms with glorious views over the loch from the guests’ lounge of the b&b or, for the more energetic, there are many activities available locally. The house is on one level and may therefore be suitable for elderly and partially disabled persons who find stairs difficult.
We are situated on the edge of the Cormonachan ancient woodland within Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and the Argyll Forest Park, which provide access to many paths, cycle ways and walks over the hills including the Cowal Way, travelling through some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland. Many of our guests use Tigh-na-Cala as a base for exploring further afield – as far as Stirling, Kilmartin Glen, Oban, Fort William and even Staffa and Skye. Guests may be attending world-renowned events held locally, such as the Cowal Highland Gathering, or the Barclays Scottish Open.
Loch Goil is a sea loch connecting to the Firth of Clyde via Loch Long and offers safe boating, fishing and other water sport activities. As there is access from Tigh-na-Cala to the shore it is suitable for guests with canoes/kayaks or small boats to launch their craft.
Red and roe deer and foxes come to visit us but are rarely seen as they generally call at night. Red squirrels, rabbits and smaller wild birds can be seen on most days eating from the bird feeders while buzzards and sparrowhawks are often to be seen in the area. Seals occasionally play in the waters by the house.
